San Francisco Might Soon Tax Robots, but Who Does It Benefit?

What does it mean to tax #Robots?

  • San Francisco city supervisor Jane Kim has been actively pushing for a robot tax to be implemented in the state.
  • When Microsoft co-founder (now billionaire philanthropist) Bill Gates spoke about a robot tax, San Francisco city supervisor Jane Kim heard him — or, at least, she read about it.
  • Now, Kim has been pushing for a robot tax in the home state of Silicon Valley, and she’s been up and about talking to the leaders of the tech industry, various labor groups throughout the state, and to public policy makers figuring out how best to implement a robot tax.
  • For every human job lost to robot labor, companies have to pay the same amount of tax and social security that person was due.
  • Essentially, the robot tax is security for the displaced human worker.

San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim is pushing for a robot tax on her city. But what are the consequences, of both implementing and rejecting a robot tax?

Ridley Scott Talks Artificial Intelligence in ‘Alien: Covenant’ Featurette

Ridley Scott Talks Artificial Intelligence in ‘Alien: Covenant’ Featurette

  • From Ash to Bishop to David, the Alien franchise has become known for its android characters, and we’ll be meeting a new one in the form of Walter (played by Michael Fassbender) in this year’s Alien: Covenant.
  • But what’s interesting here in 2017, unlike in 1979, is that real technology has finally caught up with movie technology; Walter, made out of 3D molds and with a memory chip for a brain, doesn’t feel quite as futuristic as Ash did back in the original Alien.
  • Ridley Scott, along with son Luke Scott, talks artificial intelligence in this new Alien: Covenant featurette video from Wired.
  • Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice, Jobs, The Babysitters) stars with Michael Fassbender returning as Prometheus‘ android David (and Walter), with a crew that includes Demian Bichir and Danny McBride (“Eastbound and Down”), as well as Alex England (Gods of Egypt), Billy Crudup, Amy Seimetz (A Horrible Way to Die, “The Killing”), Jussie Smollett (“Empire”), Carmen Ejogo, and Callie Hernandez (Machete Kills).
  • Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition

Ridley Scott had previously promised to answer questions that left Prometheus viewers confused: “Covenant is really going to show you who did it and why.”

Once computers start to think, we’re all in trouble. From Ash to Bishop to David, the Alien franchise has become known for its android characters, and we’l

Google is using machine learning to reduce the data needed for high-resolution images

Google is using machine learning to reduce the data needed for high-resolution images

  • Doing so reduces the data cost of each image by up to 75 percent, says Google.
  • While traditional upsampling uses fixed rules to work out which new pixels to use where, RAISR adapts its methods to each image.
  • The company says its techniques reduce data costs up to 75 percent per image
  • Last November, Google unveiled a prototype technology called RAISR that uses machine learning to make low-resolution images appear more detailed.

Google and Zalando launch Project Muze, a machine-learning experiment for 3D fashion design

Google & Zalando launch Project Muze, a machine-learning experiment for 3D fashion design

  • Google has announced an experimental project in conjunction with Germany’s Zalando that will enable users to create virtual 3D fashion designs.
  • Courtesy of a new initiative called Project Muze , the company has turned to machine learning as it explores the potential of algorithms in clothing design.
  • Project Muze is debuting at a Berlin trend show called Bread&Butter this week, and those present will be able to participate in the experiment through tablets and on a big screen.
  • Google has used machine-learning across myriad products, including Translate and Photos, and with this latest experiment, it’s delving deep into the fashion fraternity to see what comes of it. “
  • Created in partnership with U.K.-based digital design studio Stinkdigital, Project Muze constitutes a specially built engine that uses a neural network trained with the design preferences (color, texture, and style) of more than 600 fashion “trendsetters” and features data from the Google Fashion Trend Report , in addition to styles that have trended on Zalando itself.

  • Area Filmmaker Not So Thrilled Trump Used His Footage in an Ad
  • The company has the tools to the public-open sourced them-so that any developer can play with the code and use it in their own projects.
  • His team has built a set of tools that does just that.
  • For example, the company eventually build software that could fully describe photos to blind users ( it’s already part of the way there ).

  • We’ve been living happily with artificial intelligence for thousands of years.
  • It was built with the intelligence of thousands of generations of human minds, and they’re still working at it now.
  • I won’t understand how the oil that drives my central heating got from a distant oilfield to my house.
  • I’ll switch on The World Service to hear the news, and then make a few phone calls about damp-proofing.
