In Ten Years, Robots Could Replace More Than 4 Million Workers

In Ten Years, #Robots Could Replace More Than 4 Million Workers on @futurism #AI

  • A new study suggests that as many as four million human workers could be replaced by robots over the next decade.
  • Robots could replace human workers in up to four million jobs in Britain over the next decade, according to research conducted by UK market research firm YouGov on behalf of the Royal Academy of the Arts.
  • Chiefly, businesses have to make sure that the millions of workers who are replaced by robots and other automated systems aren’t left behind.
  • Many robots are simply better equipped to perform menial tasks than humans are.
  • Robots can raise overall productivity by doing the dirty, difficult, or otherwise unpleasant jobs that human workers would rather avoid.

A new study suggests that robots will replace as many as four million British workers in the next decade. Can we find new roles for these people to fill?

Using Artificial Intelligence To Make Beer Better

  • Rob McInerney, the founder & CEO of Intelligent Layer and co-founder of IntelligentX Brewing Company, explains the use of artificial intelligence in improving everyday products.
  • “We wanted to see if in the future the most effective brands are the ones that talk to their customers not to make better advertising but to share ideas.
  • We thought that they’d use artificial intelligence to help real people and brands talk to each other and we wanted to prove this in an industry which people have very strong views on and that which we had a pretty significant interest in as well… Beer… So we created intelligent X the world’s first beer brewed by artificial intelligence.”

  • Panel with Daniela Rus (MIT), Andrew Ng (Baidu), Mustafa Suleyman (DeepMind), Moshe Vardi (Rice) & Peter Norvig (Google): How AI is automating and augmenting work
  • Honoring the FrieNDA for the conference, we are only posting videos and slides below with approval of the speaker.
  • In our sequel to the 2015 Puerto Rico AI conference, we brought together an amazing group of AI researchers from academia and industry, and thought leaders in economics, law, ethics, and philosophy for five days dedicated to beneficial AI.
  • Panel with Anna Salamon (CFAR) & Paul Christiano (MIRI): Educating and mentoring AI safety researchers (Moderator: Andrew Critch)

In our sequel to the 2015 Puerto Rico AI conference, we brought together an amazing group of AI researchers from academia and industry, and thought leaders in economics, law, ethics, and philosophy for five days dedicated to beneficial AI. We hosted a two-day workshop for our grant recipients to give them an opportunity to highlight and discuss the progress with their grants. We followed that with a 2.5-day conference, in which people from various AI-related fields hashed out opportunities and challenges related to the future of AI and steps we can take to ensure that the technology is beneficial. Honoring the FrieNDA for the conference, we are only posting videos and slides below with approval of the speaker. Learn more about the Asilomar AI Principles that resulted from the conference and the process involved in developing them. (It looks like we’ll be posting almost everything, but please be patient while we finish editing and uploading videos, etc.)

Tesla update forces you to keep your hands on the wheel… or else

Tesla update forces you to keep your hands on the wheel... or else

  • Tesla Motors started pushing a software update to its Autopilot system that disables automatic steering for drivers that aren’t paying attention.
  • Tesla sees it as a feature meant to ‘aid’ a driver, not take over completely.
  • Tesla has come under fire recently after a handful of accidents, at least one fatal, caused by its Autopilot system.
  • New updates will reign in expectation a bit by warning the driver three times to place their hands on the wheel before automatic steering disengages and refuses to reengage until the car is parked.
