Pixelmator unveils new Pro software with machine learning features

  • Now, the company behind Pixelmator is introducing some of those extra features itself, unveiling a new version of its software today named Pixelmator Pro.
  • Pixelmator Pro won’t do everything that Adobe’s full suite can, but it looks to be a big step up from the company’s original software.
  • The other exciting change is a set of new machine learning-enhanced tools, integrated into Pixelmator Pro using Apple’s new Core ML API.
  • These include a new Quick Selection tool that Pixelmator says snaps to boundaries more intelligently than ever before; a feature that automatically labels different layers based on their content; and a Repair tool that will quickly and seamlessly remove and replace parts of any photo.
  • These flashy features aside, Pixelmator Pro also introduces some practical functions missing from the original software, including support for processing RAW images (a must for photographers looking to do professional-grade editing).

Pixelmator Pro will go on sale later this year, but the new set of features looks promising

  • But just months after TensorFlow was released to Google’s army of coders, the company also began offering it to the world for free, as an open source tactic.
  • S. Somasegar, a managing director at venture fund Madrona who was previously head of Microsoft’s developer division, says TensorFlow’s prominence poses a genuine challenge to Google’s cloud rivals.
  • The company has created specialized processors to make TensorFlow faster and reduce the power it consumes inside Google’s data centers.
  • Since Google released TensorFlow, its competitors in cloud computing, Microsoft and Amazon, have released, or started supporting, their own free software tools to help coders build machine-learning systems.

Google has pinned its cloud computing hopes on a bit of software that helps programmers build artificial intelligence apps called TensorFlow.

  • The group’s new software takes a novel approach to guessing what is going on inside a human brain, using data gathered from brain scans via fMRI to predict human thoughts by seeing how the pattern of brain activity that produces them, then detecting it in reverse.
  • “One of the big advances of the human brain was the ability to combine individual concepts into complex thoughts,” lead researcher Marcel Just explains.
  • The discovery of this correspondence between thoughts and brain activation patterns tells us what the thoughts are built of.”
  • The algorithm was then trained using this data, and learned to detect the same patterns occurring again, accurately predicting what a person was about to say a stunning 90 percent of the time.
